The seaside and holiday resort of Bensersiel

With us you are on holiday right on the East Frisian North Sea coast, the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea is waiting to be discovered by you.

But of course you can also chill out on the white sandy beach, splash around in the waves, go kitesurfing and take part in one or two of the fun and games organised by the Bensersiel spa administration during the season. Or you can simply enjoy the wind in your hair and the tangy sea air as you breathe, listen to the calls of the seagulls, close your eyes and let the peace and space take effect.

You can stroll around the town and feast in cafés and restaurants, explore the East Frisia region by car or bus, take the ferry to the North Sea island of Langeoog. Look around, you'll see green wherever you look! Have you ever hiked between the pastures and taken a break in a Frisian farm café? Ridden away from the dyke sheep on a cycle tour?

Whether alone, as a couple, with friends or with the whole family. Whether it's a relaxing break by the sea or a cheerful North Sea holiday: you'll have a wonderful time here in Bensersiel!

Be active in sports

For many people, a successful holiday is a mixture of lazing around and exercise. And you can get plenty of exercise on the coast: hiking, swimming, horse riding and, of course, cycling. There is a well-developed infrastructure for this. You can explore the landscape along our beautiful North Sea coast on numerous cycling and hiking routes. For example on the Ostfrieslandwanderweg, which leads past the Benser Tief. There are various bike hire shops in Bensersiel, so you can leave your own bikes at home.

Norddeich seal centre

Harbour seals and grey seals are the stars of the Wadden Sea. They also give birth to their pups here. Young harbour seals that are separated from their mothers due to disturbance and are often driven far away from the birthing area find a temporary new home in Norddeich. At the seal centre, a team of professionals and volunteers raise these orphaned "howlers" until they can be returned to the North Sea and survive there. Exhibitions, events and the marine mammals themselves provide an insight into the responsible task of the national park team.

Werdum Animal Park

Werdum Pet Park has a lot to offer. For example, not only the fresh North Sea air, but also real country air. Old breeds of domestic animals threatened with extinction are bred in the park. Information boards provide information about the animal species, their country of origin and the animal products. There is also a herb garden with farm and medicinal plants. Right next to the park, you can have fun on the playground or mini golf course. In Werdum, you can also visit the mill on certain dates and watch a blacksmith at work.

Moorland landscapes in East Frisia

On your way to Bensersiel, you will have travelled through many villages that end in '-fehn', such as Berumerfehn, Großefehn and Lübbertsfehn. These villages were once founded in the moor to extract peat, which was used for heating, among other things. The moorland areas that still exist today are protected. Other areas that have already been mined are being partially renaturalised, such as the Eternal Sea. This raised bog lake lies on the border between the districts of Wittmund and Aurich. The 89-hectare lake is surrounded by soft moorland soil on which heather, bent grass, pipe grass, birch, willow and sundew grow. The moor museum in Moordorf vividly illustrates the difficult 200-year history of the development of an East Frisian moor colony.

Wattenhuus Bensersiel

The Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. But what exactly does that mean? The Wattenhuus in Bensersiel provides the answer - and in a particularly entertaining way. The Wadden habitat can be experienced with all the senses, for example with the tide simulator, which recreates the changing tides (and their effects) in 12 minutes. Crabs, starfish, plaice and other sea creatures can be marvelled at in the North Sea water aquarium.

Museum "Life by the sea" in the Peldemühle Esens

Harlingerland is reminiscent of ancient Atlantis, which is thought to have been lost at sea. Some parts of the marsh landscape have actually sunk with entire villages in recent centuries due to rising sea levels. The exhibition in the Peldemühle building ensemble shows impressive artefacts from the submerged landscape and the town of Esens. By the way: In the clockmaker's workshop of "Hansi Ticktack" it still ticks properly!

Emden Art Gallery

We recommend taking a break in the seaport town of Emden, especially on your arrival or departure. The Kunsthalle Emden is particularly worth a visit. Here you will find modern painting and art and constantly changing exhibitions. A stimulating cultural highlight on your holiday!
